Holly Wheatcroft has used wood, oil on canvas collage, and metal in the creation of this free-standing assemblage. Horizontal slats of wood are covered in canvas, painted in broad planes of colour and arranged in a vertical fashion to resemble a tower or ladder. This balancing of horizontal and vertical elements imparts a sense of stability to otherwise transient ideas. The concept is reminiscent of an axis mundi, a Western term used to describe any object infused with sacred properties that facilitates communication between earth/sky, anima/animus, the living/the dead, male/female, the individual/community.
The title, Of Equal Hearts, was inspired by a piece of writing by artist Agnes Martin (1912 – 2004).
